"Well now, one winter it was so cold that all the geese flew backward and all the fish moved south and even the snow turned blue. Late at night, it got so frigid that all spoken words froze solid afore they could be heard. People had to wait until sunup to find out what folks were talking about the night before."

- Opening of the American folktale 'Babe the Blue Ox'
The opening of Babe the Blue Ox possesses a rich exposition made of grand exaggerations. These exaggerations give the reader a feel of the frigid cold environment that this story takes place. First, nature itself is exaggerated giving a feel that even mighty nature finds this weather cold. Then to give a deep impression of the the bitter cold, the cold is described with unbelievable ability to freeze words. The descriptions of the freezing, frigid cold are completely incredulous giving a style classic old-fashioned humor. The extravagant exaggeration used to describe the cold makes this example a definite example of hyperbolic humor.
